MARKETING MATERIAL:
Material Boy is a staged adaptation of four queer male, diasporic, South Asian writers (Rakesh Satyal, Shyam Selvadurai, Ghalib Shiraz Dhalla, and Hanif Kureishi), held together within the narrative of performer Lahore Vagistan, as she dances on stage at a nightclub, and changes "backstage." It delves explicitly and intricately into issues of interracial relationships, internalized homophobia and racism, and the performative natures of race, gender, and sexuality. It also sustains a conversation between narratives of "the veil" and "the closet," as well as the use of popular culture (i.e. Bollywood) in the production of queer diasporic identity.
Adapted by Kareem Khubchandani from:
- Blue Boy by Rakesh Satyal
- Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai
- The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi
- Ode to Lata by Ghalib Shiraz Dhalla
